Bayesian inference of plastosphere viscosities near the Kunlun Fault, northern Tibet

چکیده
[1] Flow of the mid-crust in the Tibetan Plateau may strongly influence the patterns of deformation and topography within this area. This flow requires the lowercrust to have low viscosity and so quantifying this viscosity may be used to test the idea of channel flow. An application of Bayesian methods to geologic and geodetic data from north central Tibet yields lower-crustal viscosities (assumed Newtonian) of 1 10 Pa s and 2 10 Pa s (95% bounds). The lower bound is larger than the value of 10–10 Pa s required by models of flow of the lower-crust of Tibet, unless the entire lower crust participates in channel flow. Citation: Hilley, G. E., R. GPS data from central and northern Tibet and conducting a model exploration of the surface velocity data in the context of time-dependent earthquake-cycle deformation along the Altyn Tagh and Kunlun faults. DATA ANALYSIS AND MODELING METHODS
Fault slip rate estimates along the Altyn Tagh and Kunlun strike-slip faults in northern Tibet vary considerably between short-term geodetic and long-term geologic studies. Here we reanalyze and model all global positioning system (GPS) data from northern Tibet to determine if these differences might be explained by previously unmodeled transient processes associated with the earthquake cycle, ...
متن کاملCoseismic Slip Distribution of the 2001 Kokoxili, Northern Tibet, Earthquake, Constrained by GPS and Geological Field Survey Data
We analyze GPS data observed before and after the 2001 Mw 7.8 Kokoxili earthquake in northern Tibet to derive the coseismic deformation field of that earthquake. Using this coseismic displacement data set and geologically mapped surface break measurements, we invert for the coseismic slip distribution along the seismogenic East Kunlun fault. Our result shows that the earthquake on average ruptu...

The northern piedmont of the western Kunlun mountains (Xinjiang, China) is marked at its easternmost extremity, south of the Hotan-Qira oases, by a set of normal faults trending N50E for nearly 70 km. Conspicuous on Landsat and SPOT images, these faults follow the southeastern border of a deep flexural basin and may be related to the subsidence of the Tarim platform loaded by the western Kunlun...
متن کاملPost-seismic motion following the 1997 Manyi (Tibet) earthquake: InSAR observations and modelling
S U M M A R Y On November 8 1997 a M w 7.6 earthquake occurred in the Manyi region of northern Tibet, near the western end of the Kunlun Fault. Over 7 m of left-lateral slip occurred on a 200-kmlong fault. Here we use InSAR observations of post-seismic surface deformation following the Manyi earthquake to investigate possible causal mechanisms. Time-series of deformation are constructed from 26...
متن کاملDifferential growth of the northern Tibetan margin: evidence for oblique stepwise rise of the Tibetan Plateau
Models of how high elevations formed across Tibet predict: (a) the continuous thickening of a "viscous sheet"; (b) time-dependent, oblique stepwise growth; and (c) synchronous deformation across Tibet that accompanied collision. Our new observations may shed light on this issue. Here, we use 40Ar/39Ar and (U-Th)/He thermochronology from massifs in the hanging walls of thrust structures along th...
